Rosie let’s learn about our adventures today i’m gonna draw a volcano like that one today we got really close to a volcano in the usa today we explored hawaii that’s a bunch of islands in the usa i want to say rosie wanted to see a cool picture that that’s my skin but it looks like lava it’s on my baby oh woozy look at that what what do you think that is what over there looks like a volcano hawaii was made millions of years ago by tons of lava erupting out of volcanoes and there’s still some volcanoes erupting today that’s our friend ken he’s a volcano expert what’s the name of the volcano the name of the volcano yeah this is kilauea volcano kilauea kilauea the one we’re on and the one you can see behind us that’s mauna loa do you know how big that mountain is that mountain is over 13 000 feet tall holy cow but it comes from the floor of the ocean underwater it comes up 30 thousand feet it’s as tall as mount everest what yeah everything on our islands is lava it was once red hot and melted and it’s come up to the surface what is lava it’s melted rock and so if i take a rock and i heat it up real hot inside the earth it melts why is all the hot well the better question if you’re the earth it’s why is the surface cold we’re lucky that the surface of our planet is cold enough that we can walk on and it’s solid right can you stamp your feet is it solid yeah would you like the surface of our planet if it was all gooey and molten right no we wouldn’t do this jello walking on the volcano felt like walking on the moon have you been to the moon i have not been to the moon whoops that’s the one problem with volcanoes they’re made all of rocks so there’s lots of rocks out here to trip over hey this looks like a turtle this one yeah you like that lava’s mean but cool it’s hot but it’s cool yeah brand new lava looks really shiny it almost looks like it’s made out of metal while we were exploring we ran into ken’s friend terry aloha terry aloha is hawaiian for hello and goodbye look at this out here holy ravioli hey can you pick me up sure come on over here we’ll get you up some wines believe a goddess named pele lives in the volcano and people still come here and leave offerings to her over here this is considered her home julian is it glass like a girl god sorta and she was a goddess yeah she’s a goddess so she’s one of the goddesses that take care of the volcano and she’s the volcano um like fire goddess kelly’s name even means hot lava in hawaii i’m looking to the clock ken said he’d take us to get a closer look at the hot pellet but first we took some pictures oh he’s good that’s really hard ken took us for a drive to get even closer to the lava okay would you believe that we’re inside of a town now before when kilauea erupted it covered everything this was a town with 200 houses in it this happened almost 20 years ago out there how much stuff has grown back on there in 20 years is there many plants growing out there not really not a lot of plants out there so this is real different you know if if a hurricane comes and knocks your house over you still have your yard you still have your land yeah but when a lava flow comes it’s like somebody came and poured like 40 or 50 feet of concrete on top of your house look at that car time to see some lava it looks shiny ready yeah yeah it is shiny isn’t it you know why why because the whole top of the lava flow is made out of glass just like glass in a window oh you know how shiny glasses yeah see how it sparkles in the sunlight yeah why is there cracks because as the lava gets bigger it breaks apart it pushes apart and it makes these big cracks okay i’m gonna just keep holding your hand that’ll keep you from falling down okay how can we not earn holding julian’s what how can we not know what i’m doing i’m good uh because i only got one hand and you know what you’re cuter than he is hey but you said i was your newest senior well you’re my buddy yeah but uh it got hotter and hotter as we got closer to the lava terry stayed with us while ken went to get some lava for an experiment the first thing i’m gonna do is i’m gonna go get a sample i’m gonna use this pipe and reach in there and get a sample of that hot lava that stuff in there you know how hot that lava is how it’s about four times hotter than your oven gets so we’ll measure the temperature next but first i’m gonna go get a sample of it hey you ready yeah okay wish me well high five air five air five yeah ken had to be really careful the ground could get so hot it can melt your shoes is it a here or she the volcano okay you guys well kelly’s a girl she’s a woman that’s what the lava looks like whoa look at this can get a little closer you can come up and look at it but don’t touch it okay that’s super hot can attach the thermometer to check how hot the lava was 236 so do you want to put your hand on that no okay good decision-making 1530. be careful ken okay that’s all i can take good
